Day 2 in Montevideo: An Unforgettable Day of Learning and Community in Uruguay 🇺🇾✨

Day 2 in Uruguay was another extraordinary experience, deepening my understanding of the country's unique educational landscape and the warm, community-oriented culture. Each school visit offered valuable lessons, resonating with my aspirations as a global educator.


Our morning at the Instituto de Alta Especialización: Bilingual High School was particularly insightful regarding language acquisition. The students' impressive English fluency, especially the one who credited "a lot of YouTube," was a powerful reminder of how informal, self-directed learning can powerfully complement traditional classroom instruction. This perfectly illustrates the evolving landscape of language education. Witnessing the efficacy of a more fluid, student-driven approach through digital platforms like YouTube, and the use of a virtual tutor named Steve (who tailors content-specific English instruction), reinforced my belief in the importance of fostering learner autonomy and leveraging technology for personalized learning experiences. As a global educator, I hope to encourage my students to explore diverse digital resources for language learning, moving beyond traditional methods and embracing the wealth of authentic content available online.


Lunch at the elementary school next door, with its delicious homemade fish stew and pudding, highlighted a simple yet profound aspect of Uruguayan school culture: the emphasis on nourishing environments and holistic student well-being. These wholesome are an extension of the care and warmth schools strive to provide. In the U.S., school meals often face budget constraints and can sometimes feel less personal. This experience made me reflect on the broader role of schools in fostering a sense of comfort and belonging. In fact, the best meals on this trip were the ones made at the schools we visited.


The afternoon visit to Escuela Rural N°88 Alfredo Nobel, a rural public elementary school, was truly heartwarming and profoundly impactful. Principal Dario and his wife, living on the school grounds, embody an unparalleled level of dedication and love for their school and its community. Their passion was evident in every detail, from the vibrant classrooms to the peaceful butterfly garden. This school is a shining example of strong school-family partnerships and deeply embedded community spirit. The merienda hosted by the families, with every treat handmade, including the incredible alfajores, underscored the deep connection between the school and its families. This level of parental involvement and community support in education is truly inspiring. In the U.S., fostering such strong home-school connections can sometimes be a challenge, especially in diverse urban or rural settings. This experience has reinforced the critical importance of actively building and nurturing these relationships. I hope to bring this model of deep community engagement into my future practice, actively seeking out ways to involve families in meaningful ways, perhaps through community events, skill-sharing workshops, or even collaborative projects that leverage local talents, much like the families contributing their homemade treats. It’s a powerful reminder that education extends beyond the classroom walls and thrives when it's truly a collaborative effort.


Beyond the specific educational insights, the hospitality we experienced everywhere was truly remarkable. The magical dinner at Marichal Wines, hosted by a parent, with delicious empanadas and warm conversations as the sun set, was the perfect culmination of a day filled with generosity. This pervasive welcoming and generous spirit of the Uruguayan people has had a personal impact, making me feel incredibly valued and connected. It's a powerful lesson in the importance of building genuine relationships, showing kindness, and fostering a sense of belonging, not just within the school community but also as a global citizen. I aim to infuse this same spirit of warmth and genuine connection into my interactions with students, families, and colleagues in my future practice, creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
