Growing Sustainability with Native Trees

In a fourth-grade lesson on SDG 15: Life on Land, my students explored the importance of native Hawaiian plants like the ulu (breadfruit) tree and a‘ali‘i in supporting biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, and connecting to Hawaiian culture. They discussed how trees provide oxygen, food, and shade, helping to cool Ewa Beach’s rising temperatures, and learned how reforesting with native plants combats climate change and restores habitats. Through hands-on activities, they identified native vs. non-native plants and explored how computer science supports sustainability through data collection and monitoring reforestation efforts. The lesson emphasized the role of trees in protecting land, supporting wildlife, and improving air quality. Students concluded by creating action plans to plant native trees on campus, embracing their kuleana (responsibility) and connecting technology to sustainability efforts.
